The UK primary curriculum consists of two main learning domains. They are Cambridge Primary Curriculum and elementary key stages
Cambridge Primary Curriculum
Cambridge primary curriculum aims at building a strong foundation for students in primary classes on subjects like English, Science and Mathematics. Cambridge Primary English enables learners to communicate confidently and effectively and to develop the critical skills to respond to a range of information, media and texts with understanding and enjoyment. Cambridge also has another subject named English as second language. This curriculum develops learners’ speaking, listening, reading and writing skills in English. The mathematics curriculum framework explores five content areas: number, geometry, measure, handling data and problem solving. This curriculum framework covers four content areas: scientific enquiry, biology, chemistry and physics.
Key Stages
Key Stage 1:
It include years 1 and 2 which consists of students between the ages of 5-7. The subjects included in Key Stage 1 are English, Mathematics, Science, Art & Design, Computing, Design & Tech, Geography, History, Languages, Music and Physical Education. The contents included in English are Spoken Language, Word Reading, Comprehension, Spelling, Handwriting and Presentation, Composition, Vocabulary, Grammar and Punctuation. The topics covered under key stage 1 mathematics are Number and Place Value, Addition & Subtraction, Multiplication & Division, Fractions, Measurement, Properties of shapes and Position and Direction. Basics of science are taught in Key Stage 1 which includes working scientifically, Plants, Animals including humans, everyday materials and seasonal changes. Key Stage 2 includes years 3, 4, 5 and 6. The students in Key stage 2 are generally in the age group of 7-11. The advanced levels of Key Stage 1 is followed in Key Stage 2. More emphasis is laid on the advanced levels of English topics covered in Key Stage 1. An additional topic of statistics is covered in Mathematics Key Stage 2. The higher levels of Science topics are taught in Key stage 2.
Key Stage 3:
The students in Key Stage 3 are the ones from Years 7, 8, and 9. Those students are in the age group of 11-14. Key Stage 3 also follows the advanced levels of what is taught in Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2. Key Stage 4 includes Years 10 and 11 are included in Key Stage 4 where the students between 14-16 years of age pursue their studies.
